Will Datson: Array Series

The appearance of these pieces varies in both size and media. Some are printed onto metal panels, others are large giclée (fine art) prints on paper and a few are painted stencils on plywood. I began these in the early 2000s, designing on a computer and using a desktop printer to make a single image on each sheet. It was almost ten years later, when I had a studio in Glasgow, that I started to make high quality prints and experiment with stencils, stamps and printing onto metal.

About the Array series

The array series uses a repeated image with minor variations. I see this as a form of animation as the eye moves from one element to another to spot differences, which in a way resembles an exposed flip book. The duplicated image also has similarities to decorative items such as wallpaper, tile and textile design where repetition of a motif produces a pattern but in this case expectation is disrupted by deliberate modification.
